Mailmanagr for Basecamp

Milestones!

Mailmanagr’s hit a milestone; it now supports milestones.

I couldn’t resist phrasing it that way, but you’ll be happy to see that there’s a new tab for Milestones available now. You can set up an address for each of your projects to assign milestones.

  1. Put a date in the subject
  2. Put a milestone in the body of the message

You can (optionally) assign milestones the same way you set up notification on messages, using your people tab. Milestones can be assigned to individuals, or to companies (but not to multiple individuals).

Enjoy.

Notifications!

I’m happy to report that message notifications are all setup now.

There’s a new tab in Mailmanagr called “People” that will let you set up nicknames for people and companies. Once you’ve got them set up, and you want to notify them, you put their nickname in parentheses as the first line of your message:

(jon, dave, stu, companyxyz)
Hey everyone, I just posted this by e-mail! Isn't that cool?

Mailmanagr will take a look at your message and match up those nicknames to actual people you have set up. In the case of a company, it will send it to everyone from that company who has access to that project (just like it works in Basecamp when you check off a company).

Hope you find it useful, as always, if you have any feedback or run into any problems, do give me a shout.

Addresses

If you’ve been playing with the beta, you know that I’m just letting folks set up whatever they like for addresses. If you want to set up abc123@mailmanagr.com for an address, you can.

I opted to go this route so that people can set up really short addresses if they want. I could have forced a projectname.categoryname e-mail address, but I opted not to. Was it the right decision?

Taking a quick look at what’s been set up already, people seem to be choosing sensible names and not just picking “aaa” because it’s easy to type. Because of this, I’m inclined just to leave it as is. I can always add additional domain names if we start to get into a name crunch.

Another option is to go the subdomain approach - using @projectname.mailmanagr.com as the e-mail address, but again, this makes addresses longer.

I thought I’d let anyone who wants to chime in. Should I add structure, or leave it as is? If I did add structure, I wouldn’t wipe out all existing accounts… it would only be for new stuff set up on the system. Leave me a comment with your thoughts.

vCards added

vCard supportMailmanagr has been in the wild for less than a day, and we’ve only had one little issue reported. So, with all the time that I didn’t spend fixing bugs, I added in vCards. Now you can download a vCard for each address you setup.

I’m eager to hear what people think so far. I’ve had some great suggestions that I’m kicking around. If you have any ideas, drop me a line at info@industryinteractive.net.

Beta Launched

Our early beta has launched! Earlier today I sent a message out to everyone who subscribed to our mailing list, as well as posted a tweet to the Mailmanagr twitter account.

If you should have received the announcement, but you didn’t, drop me a line at info@industryinteractive.net and I’d be more than happy to hook you up.

Where the heck is the beta?

I’ve learned the lesson that you really shouldn’t set release dates until you’re ready to release. I’ve actually got a working beta all ready to go, but I’m not happy with the way it’s setup.

Currently, I don’t have a Mailmanagr username/password system — I just use Basecamp information. The problem with that is that my OpenID authentication setup isn’t great. I’ve tested it with about half a dozen OpenID providers and two out of the six don’t work. I’m not sure why, they just don’t.

So I think in the interest of getting something into your hands, I’m just going to axe OpenID and have you setup an account on Mailmanagr (for now). I’m a huge fan of OpenID so I’m still keeping it in play, I’m just going to have to put it off for now.

If you haven’t signed up for the mailing list (above), please do so. They’ll be getting the first round of invites. I’m super excited, we’re really close now. Thanks for all your patience, I hope it’s worth the wait for you!
